Is this the most useless freehub ever?

A Campagnolo freehub affixed to a wheelSometimes I don’t get the point of “high end” roadie stuff. For instance this Campagnolo freehub.

This is a standard 9-spline freehub, but looks can be deceiving because it has these cutouts towards the larger gears. Quite frankly I don’t see the point of this because the only benefit I can see is a minimal rotational moment of inertia saving.

Moment of Inertia

Moment of inertia is the mass property of a rigid body that defines the torque needed for a desired angular acceleration about an axis of rotation. That is, how hard you need to pedal to get the wheel turning.
See Wikipedia’s formulas for moments of inertia and this calculator for hoops.

Instead what we have is less splines for the cassette to push against, leading to increased force against the remaining splines while you’re in lower gears, effectively limiting the possible torque before the cassette tears through the hub.

It’s not like you need that torque right, because you’re in lower gear because you’re climbing a hill. You’re probably up on your pedals and if anything creating more torque.

This is a silly device.
